The town is just a few miles from Stallion gate, the northern entrance to White Sands Missile Testing range, where the Los Alamos scientists tested the first atomic bomb. The scientists would often eat at the Owl and told anyone who asked that they were ‘miners’. BTW, Conrad Hilton is a Native of San Antonio. His parents ran the drug store that used to be on the North East corner of the Plaza in near by Socorro and he’s a graduate of the New Mexico School of Mines (now New Mexico Tech) in Socorro.

I’m sorry to hear that the Olguin family no longer runs the Buckhorn and wish the new owners well!

One more reason to talky daughter into a return road trip to NM! Of interest, we do a pretty mean GCC down here in Texas. Alamo Cafe outside of Fredericksburg, TX. Legit. Made the cover of Texas Monthly as few years back as best cheeseburger in the state and it still reigns supreme. But wait till October to visit. It’s hot enough to kill outside right now.

As another person put it. Get back to Sparky’s. It is now my favorite all time burger. I live in Albuquerque. Also as another commenter put it, I want to replicate this. Their burger’s have this juice that runs out that is so good and it soaks into your potato wedge fries. The bun is nothing that great, but the chile, the cheese and the awesome juicy burger more than make up for it. Too bad it was closed when you went. I don’t think you’ll regret their burger!
